The Malom Guesthouse is located in the historic center of Erdőhorváti, in the heart of Tokaj’s Jewish heritage. With a panoramic view, it welcomes those seeking spiritual reflection, culinary traditions, or peaceful retreat. Once part of the area’s water mills, the restored building offers modern comfort in a historic setting.

Official category: rural private accommodation (NTAK: MA25115013) – providing a discreet, family-like atmosphere away from mass tourism. Ideal for visitors following Jewish traditions, who wish to immerse themselves in authentic heritage.

The air-conditioned rooms feature wooden floors, antique windows, and wrought-iron details recalling the timeless Jewish cultural atmosphere. The kitchen has two parts: a traditional oven space and a modern section. Meals are by prior arrangement and are prepared after ritual slaughter, exclusively for guests, in intimate and limited settings.

Guests can enjoy views of the Tokaj hills and the quiet Jewish quarter. Nearby stands the heritage kosher slaughterhouse, preserving the spirit of shechita. Ritual slaughter is performed by a religious Jew, reciting the blessing: “Barukh Attah Adonai… asher kidd’shanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivvanu al ha-shechita.” The process follows tradition, with chalaf (slaughtering knife), nikur, soaking, salting, and kashering of liver.

The site also includes an underground icehouse carved in stone for meat storage, keeping natural freezing temperatures, and a small brick smokehouse, both preserved as rare examples of Jewish culinary practice in rural Hungary.

10 minutes away lies Bodrogkeresztúr, home to the grave of the famous Reb Shayele, attracting thousands of pilgrims, especially from Israel and the US.

Regulation of Religious Dining

Meals are prepared only for guests staying at the accommodation, not as public or commercial catering. Food is used within the private premises and consumed exclusively by the group. Ritual slaughter is performed as a religious service, not business.

The Importance of the Kosher Slaughterhouse

The slaughterhouse was a central place for observing dietary laws and community practice. Ritual slaughter was not only food preparation but also a spiritual act. Occasional slaughters help preserve identity and tradition.
